English follows Dutch
Bart Swinkels, masterstudent Political Science aan de Radboud Universiteit (RU), vertaalt na elke persconferentie de coronamaatregelen voor internationale studenten. Hij begon ermee als vriendendienst, maar inmiddels tellen zijn whatsappgroepen in totaal zevenhonderd leden. ‘Het is een beetje uit de hand gelopen, maar ik blijf lekker mensen helpen.’
Tijdens de eerste coronapersconferentie in maart realiseerde Swinkels, toen nog bachelorstudent Liberal Arts & Sciences aan de Rijkuniversiteit Groningen, dat zijn internationale medestudenten de belangrijke mededelingen helemaal niet meekregen. ‘Toen heb ik in de algemene groepsapp van de studie een simpel berichtje gestuurd: vanaf overmorgen ligt het sociale leven in Nederland grotendeels plat’, vertelt hij. Naar aanleiding daarvan kreeg hij wat vragen en reacties van studiegenoten binnen en maakte hij voor de coronainformatie een speciale groepsapp aan. De leden daarvan houdt hij nog steeds op de hoogte. ‘Na elke persconferentie of afgekondigde coronamaatregelen in Nederland, vertaal ik de informatie en stuur ik die daarin’, vertelt Swinkels. ‘Daarnaast vermeld ik er altijd bij dat vragen vooral moeten worden gesteld als die er nog zijn.’
Omslachtig en lastig
Volgens Swinkels is er onder studenten grote vraag naar de vertaalde uitleg: inmiddels houdt hij zo’n zevenhonderd internationals, zowel in Groningen als in Nijmegen, via Whatsapp op de hoogte. Hij denkt dat deze massale toestroom voortkomt uit de matige Engelstalige informatievoorziening vanuit de overheid. ‘Alle informatie staat allemaal wel op de website van de rijksoverheid, maar het is allemaal erg omslachtig en lastig te vinden. Voor uitleg rondom positieve testuitslagen moet je bijvoorbeeld vanuit de Nederlandstalige pagina twee keer doorklikken om bij de Engelstalige informatie te komen’, legt hij uit.
Catarina Villa Nova, een Portugese medestudent van Swinkels aan de master Political Science en lid van de whatsappgroep, herkent dit: ‘Voor mij vergt het heel veel zoekwerk om bijvoorbeeld te vinden voor welke landen Nederland een quarantaineplicht heeft ingesteld. Alle informatie staat namelijk overal en nergens verspreid op het web. De whatsappgroep maakt het heel makkelijk om uitleg te krijgen, omdat Bart er gewoon een bericht over stuurt en alles op een plek is te vinden.’
Steeds meer internationals in Nederland kloppen daarom bij Swinkels aan voor hulp. ‘Laatst nam zelfs een expatcentrum contact op met de vraag of ik de vertalingen met hen wil delen’, lacht de student. ‘Het is een beetje uit de hand gelopen, maar ik blijf lekker mensen helpen.’

After every press conference held by the Dutch government, Bart Swinkels, master student Political Science at the Radboud University (RU), translates the measures against the coronavirus for international students. While it started out as a kind turn, his whatsapp groups currently count seven hundred members. ‘It got a bit out of hand, but I just keep helping people.’
During the first coronavirus press conference in March, Swinkels realised that his fellow international Liberal Arts & Sciences students weren’t aware of the important announcements. ‘I just sent a message in the general whatsapp group of my studies: from the day after tomorrow onwards, the social life in Holland will stop’, he says. After this message, Swinkels received some questions and reactions from his fellow students. He decided to create a special whatsapp group to share information. ‘After every press conference or after the announcement of new measures, I translate the information and share it in that group’, he tells. ‘Next to that, I always mention that if there are any questions left, the members can always pose them.’
Laborious and challenging
According to Swinkels, there is a huge demand for the translated explanation. He now informs seven hundred internationals in Groningen and Nijmegen, via Whatsapp. He thinks this amount is related to the poor information supply by the Dutch government. ‘All of the information is published on the website of the government, but it’s very laborious and challenging to trace. For an explanation of tests, you got to click through twice on a Dutch page in order to get access to the English information.’
Catarina Vila Nova, a fellow student of Swinkels from Portugal and a member of the whatsapp group, confirms this: ‘It requires a lot of searching to find out for which countries the Netherlands demand to quarantine if you come from there. All of the information is very diffused on the web. The whatsapp group makes it a lot easier to get an explanation, since Bart just sends a message which explains it and everything is in one place.’
More and more internationals in the Netherlands apply to Swinkels for help. ‘Lately an expat centre contacted me and asked me whether I was willing to share the translations’, he tells. ‘It got out of hand a little, but I just keep helping people.’
